» Born on the breezy evening of May 31, 1985, Andrew Michael Sutherland's birth was hardly anything out of the ordinary. Being the second son and fourth (but not last) child of William and Ava Sutherland, his parents were practically professionals. They had met years earlier when hot shot attorney Will helped Ava, a model who would settle into the housewife role quite nicely, file for divorce from her first husband. While it wasn't exactly love as first sight, it didn't take long for a lavish wedding and adoring family to follow.
» Growing up just outside of Philadelphia in the wealthy suburb of Haverford, PA, Andrew's childhood was one many would consider themselves lucky to have. His mother doted on all of her little angels constantly, and his father, though consumed with his work, made sure they got the best of everything. Still, most important to Drew were his brothers and sisters: OPEN, OPEN, Elle, and Elizabeth. Even when they drove him crazy, which was the majority of the time, the four were always his best friends and continue to be to this day.
» As a kid, Andrew's curiosity for everything had a tendency to get him in trouble, and he was used as the scapegoat by his brother and older boys in the neighborhood. But, for the most part, Drew was a sweet kid. He would try anything at least once, whether it was chess, art, space camp, dance, cooking, and of course, sports.
» Since the day Andrew discovered baseball it has been a huge part of his life. He can remember it so vividly: William had taken all the kids on a rare outing to watch the Phillies play the Yankees. They got hot dogs and foam fingers and sat in the crowd cheering at the top of their lungs. The Phillies ended up losing, but it was the best day of eight-year-old Drew's life. Immediately after he started playing pick up games in the street, and his mom put him on a local little league team. Whatever he could do to get more baseball, Andrew did.
» Even as he got older, his obsession didn't wear off. He collected baseball cards religiously, and his room looked like an add for Phillies memorabilia. Any money he could muster automatically went towards tickets for games. Naturally, Drew tried out for his high school's team and impressed everyone. Not only did he eat, breathe, sleep baseball, but Andrew had serious talent. And his dedication paid off: he was on varsity as a freshman, lettered all four years of school, won MVP twice in a row, and was even team captain as a senior.
» The few spare moments Drew wasn't spending on baseball he was spending with Sophie Eldridge. She lived down the street, and their families had been friends for ages. As kids, Sophie had been Andrew's girlfriend in the sense that they chased each other around the playground, but as teenagers it became more serious. They dated from eighth grade to senior year, and she slowly but surely became his high school sweetheart. Any first Andrew had in the realm of girls was taken by Sophie: first girlfriend, first date, first kiss.It was always thought they they'd get married.
» But when graduation came in 2003, the two found their lives moving in completely separate directions and made the mutual decision to call it quits. Drew, much to his father's dismay, had been recruited to play in the minor leagues. He wanted to follow his dreams instead of attending college or getting a real job, and William considered this impractical. Despite the protests, Andrew signed with Harrisburg Senators and, after a few years with them, moved to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, ruining much of the relationship he has left with his father.
» Drew spent four years in the minor leagues before he decided to leave. He told everyone it was because he had made little progress toward breaking into the majors, but that wasn't exactly the truth. His last year, he had gotten mixed up with steroids, and it became common knowledge in the baseball community. Not only did the IronPigs want nothing to do with him, but no minor (let alone major) league team would even look his way. He quickly got off the juice, but with his professional baseball dreams behind him, Andrew instead decided to become an EMT.
» After getting certified, Drew took a job working for the city of Haverford. In late 2008, a routine 911 call had him delivering a patient to the nearby hospital, where he met a nurse by the name of Riley Fritz. They butted heads at first, but that only made Andrew like her more. He immediately asked her out, and they quickly hit it off. The couple had been together a while when Riley learned that she was pregnant. Even though it was planned, Drew easily became excited about the idea of being a father. They started talking baby names and godparents.
» But sadly, just as quick as the pregnancy came, it left. Riley had lost the baby, and doctors told her she might have a hard time conceiving in the future. Both were devastated. More than anything, he was as ready to start a family. Ultimately, everything just brought Riley and Drew even closer together. They got a cute little house and a dog together and have been happily dating for a little over two years. Andrew knows that she's the ~one, he just has yet to put a ring on it. But that doesn't mean it's not in the back of his mind...
